Cayuga County employers added 500 new jobs in September, with most of them coming from the private sector.
New data from the state Department of Labor put the county’s total non-farm job count at 27,100 last month, a 1.9-percent increase over the level reported for September 2015. The private sector job count of 21,100 was an increase of 400 jobs. The total for September 2016 was the largest private sector job count in Cayuga County for that month dating back to 1990.
Cayuga County’s unemployment rate ranked 22nd lowest out of 62 New York counties. Columbia and Tompkins counties had the lowest marks at 3.7 percent.
Cayuga County continued to see a lower unemployment rate come with increased labor market participation. The total number of employed residents grew from 35,800 people to 36,400 over the past 12 months. The unemployed count dropped by 1,000 to 1,700.
