On April 7, 1933, the Cullen-Harrison Act went into effect after signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who then famously said, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.” Wikipedia has plenty more information on the subject of National Beer Day, but we thought this might be a good time to reflect on the resurgence of the craft brewing industry in Cayuga County.
Cayuga County is home to five growing craft breweries as well as retail markets, bars, and restaurants that sell specialty beer, cider, and wine. Our county has a history in the brewing industry dating back to the late 19th century when there were at least a dozen breweries along the Owasco River. The largest of which was the Lakeshore Brewing Co. at 10 Garden Street, which produced 30,000 barrels a year.
We welcome the return of craft breweries and smaller-scale production businesses to our county during this time of growth.
