Businesses in Cayuga County have access to the utilities they need from private and municipal providers.

Electricity

The primary private electricity and gas providers in Cayuga County are NYSEG and R G & E. However, alternative forms of energy are becoming increasingly important and accessible to industries in the County. Alternative energy options include power generation from co-generation plants, digesters and solar panel installations at various sites. These energy sources provide businesses with reliable power at below-market rates.

Cayuga County has been designated as a Clean Energy Community by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).  Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing is available through the Energy Improvement Corporation’s Energize NY PACE program.  PACE financing programs use authority given to a municipality to offer financing for property owners to fund energy efficiency and renewable energy projects on existing commercial structures. The property owner voluntary agrees to repay the financing through a special assessment or special tax charge placed on their annual property tax bill. This provides financing for these types of improvements over time without requiring the property owner to make a large upfront investment.

Telecommunications

Telecommunication services in Cayuga County are made possible by a number of providers, including:

  • Broadview Networks
  • Clarity Connect
  • FirstLight
  • Frontier Communications
  • HughesNet
  • One Communications
  • Spectrum
  • TDS Telecom
  • Verizon New York
  • Viasat

Recent improvements have been made to Cayuga County’s broadband network, and it continues to grow.  In fact, a recent nationwide internet speed study conducted by PCMag ranked Auburn, NY, the seat of Cayuga County, fastest among U.S. cities for both download and upload speeds. In 2012 Clarity Connect received over $2M from NYS to expand coverage in Northern Tompkins and Southern Cayuga County.  This project will bring high speed service to more than 3,000 new homes and businesses. In August 2010, TDS Telecom received a $640K grant to expand broadband coverage throughout the region and provide service to additional homes and businesses.
