Cayuga County is located in the center of the Rochester, Syracuse, and Ithaca research triangle. We are centrally located within the region of higher ed and research institutions like Rochester Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, and Cornell University.
At the completion of the 2009-2010 school year, over 80% of high school graduates in Cayuga County planned on pursuing higher education. These graduates have many opportunities for learning nearby, whether it is at the two colleges located in Cayuga County or at institutions in neighboring counties.
Named to Forbes’ Top College List in 2011, Wells College is a four-year liberal arts college that recently expanded its business program upon the completion of the Center for Business and Entrepreneurship. The new center includes the Innovation Lab, which mentors students on how to create solutions in any type of business or situation. Once an all-women’s institution, the college now has a coed enrollment of over 550 students studying a variety of subjects.

Founded in 1953, Cayuga Community College provides 1,600 students with degree and certificate programs that are tailored for technical occupations, liberal arts education, or other careers.

Those who live in Cayuga County place a high value on education. As a result, residents of the County are highly educated and make up an innovative workforce. There are twelve public school districts within Cayuga County, as well as numerous private options. While all of the school districts and private schools offer a productive and high quality educational experience, County students also have the opportunity to attend Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). BOCES provides both career and technical education opportunities to juniors and seniors who spend half of the day at their regular high school and the other half at the $41 million, LEED-certified BOCES facility in Aurelius.
With the goal of providing an environment for applied learning to prepare students for the demands of the modern workplace, each program is advised by a committee comprised of industry representatives who help the students find internships and employment upon the completion of the program.
